Webhooks are distributed systems disguised as HTTP POSTs. Vendors retry; your handlers must be idempotent, fast and observable.
Verify signatures first
Reject unauthenticated payloads before touching database. Use constant-time comparison for HMAC secrets. Log verification failures separately from processing errors.
Respond quickly, process async
Return 200 after persisting raw payload to queue. Heavy work — PDF generation, CRM sync — belongs in workers. Timeouts cause duplicate deliveries.
Reconciliation jobs
Nightly cron compares vendor state with local records. Webhooks get lost. Polling backfill catches drift.
